Pumpkin Cookie Season!

Image
Nope.  This is not a family recipe.  Unless you consider my colleagues at work family!  And some of them I definitely place under that header.  This cookie recipe has become a fixture for our families fall festivities though!  It is Pumpkin Cookie Season!   My colleague Sara brought these for a staff potluck in 2017. I have seen versions of this recipe on various other blogs and websites, but this one is mine… perfected for my oven and over time from Sara's recipe.  Fall isn’t in full swing until I have made a batch of these beauties!   Preheat Oven: 350 ° Ingredients: 2 c. butter, softened 2 c. granulated sugar 2 t. baking powder 2 t. baking soda 1 t. salt 1 t. ground cinnamon 1 t. ground nutmeg 2 eggs 2 t. vanilla 1 ½ - 2 c. pumpkin puree (or a 15oz. can) 4 ¼ c. flour Frosting: ½ c. butter ½ c. brown sugar – packed ¼ c. milk 1 t. vanilla 2 ¼ - 2 ¾ c. powdered sugar Ground cinnamon or pumpkin pie sp...

Strawberry Season is Coming!

Image
It's May. It's not quite strawberry season yet, but somewhere they ARE growing and I love eating them!  It's time to pull out the family shortcake recipe.... Some people think strawberry shortcake is best on sponge cake or angel food.  Some people will just crack open a can of Grands.  Me? Oh no! I neeeeeeed Grandma's shortcake! Similar to a biscuit but so much easier, it whips up fast and is better than any other cake with my strawberries.  The women of my family have been making it for generations. Ingredients: 2 c. flour 1 t. salt 1 T. baking powder 1/2 c. sugar 1/4 c. shortening 1 egg 3/4 c. milk Mix dry ingredients.  Cut in the shortening. Add milk and mix with a fork until blended.  I prefer to use butter flavored Crisco for my shortening.  I am sure Gram and Great Grandma didn't have such luxury but my mom always did. It will be a sticky gooey mess. Spread it into a greased 9x9 pan.  I always use this beat up met...

Homemade Breadsticks

Image
For as long as I can remember, my Friday nights growing up were pizza night.  Not a $5 hot-n-ready or a Howie Nowie.  Oh no!  We had homemade pizza with doughy delicious crust and topped with whatever my mom had in the fridge (or garden).  I never understood why other kids my age didn't like the crust of their pizzas.  I thought the crust was the BEST part!  It didn't take long before my mom realized it was such a hit and she began making extra for breadsticks! They became a welcome addition to Friday nights; sometimes even a mid-week meal! My mom's dough recipe came from her mom, my Grandma VanOstran. Glenna to her friends, Gramma Great to my children and just Gram to me. She says she always used this recipe. She made pizza a lot over the years. She never made breadsticks like my mom, but her kids loved the crust! Looking through her well-worn recipes in her recipe box, she says this recipe must have come from someone. It was handwritten; that means s...

Why I Cook

Image
Welcome to my blog, Krista's Kitchen Lore.  I've decided to start this blog mainly to capture the recipes that have been passed down to me by the amazing women in my life, my mom, my grandma, my great grandma and those before them. Family recipes...and, hopefully, the stories that go with them... to pass on and share with my children, budding amateur chefs and future home cooks. This is us. And why I cook.... it's my love language. <3
